Reimagining What Already Exists: Traralgon Primary School
At DiMase Architects, we understand that meaningful change doesn’t always come from starting over. Existing buildings often hold value—not just in their structure, but in their history, connection to community, and capacity for renewal. With thoughtful design and a clear vision, it’s entirely possible to breathe new life into aging infrastructure and create something truly transformative.
Our recent work at Traralgon Primary School exemplifies this approach. Rather than demolishing a tired 1960s Light Timber Frame Construction (LTC) building, we chose to refurbish and reimagine it. The result is a dynamic, flexible learning environment that supports the needs of a contemporary curriculum while respecting the fabric of the original structure.
Designing for Flexibility, Connection and Wellbeing
Working closely with the Victorian School Building Authority, the school community, and our building partner DUCON Maintenance, we set out to create spaces that are not only functional, but inspiring.
We converted a series of outdated classrooms into larger, more adaptable learning zones that can be easily opened up or closed off depending on the activity. These spaces now encourage collaboration and group learning, while also incorporating smaller, more intimate nooks for individual study or tuition.
Beyond the classrooms, we enhanced circulation and connectivity across the school. A new external walkway now links two previously disconnected buildings, creating better flow and access across the site. We also rejuvenated the central corridor—often the backbone of any school environment—and added practical storage facilities to support day-to-day operations.
A Modest Budget, a Major Transformation
One of the project’s key achievements was the impact made within a modest budget. Through careful planning and strategic re-use of existing elements, we were able to deliver a result that feels both modern and inviting without excessive cost. Warm materials, natural light, and thoughtful detailing combine to create a welcoming atmosphere that supports both teaching and learning.
The flexibility now embedded in these spaces is especially valuable in today’s educational landscape. Teachers can adapt their environments to suit different teaching styles, group sizes, and learning needs—something that is crucial in delivering a responsive, student-centred curriculum.
Collaboration at Every Stage
From the earliest masterplanning discussions through to final completion, we worked in close partnership with all stakeholders to ensure the design responded to their needs—on time and within budget. Clear communication and shared goals were key to the success of the project.
A Fresh Vision, Rooted in the Past
This project reinforces what we at DiMase Architects strongly believe: that you don’t need to tear down in order to create something new. By reimagining what already exists, we can deliver spaces that are thoughtful, sustainable, and deeply connected to the communities they serve.
