Curriculum Vitae: Mahshid Karami

Mahshid Karami

For me, architecture is about our everyday lives. I love that it engages with so many other fields like art, engineering, society and even politics.

With years of experience in urbanism and public spaces, I enjoy being involved with real people and their concerns. My aim is to help by creating useful and effective buildings full of beauty, light and colour.

As a project designer with Dimase Architects, I relish the details—preparing architectural drawings and construction documentation for our projects. I like ensuring the clients are happy and satisfied with every part of the outcome.

My favourite projects are those that provide a sound response to environmental issues, and that will last for a long time. These types of projects can have tremendous effects on people’s lives.

In my spare time I like designing and making things. I create leather bags from scratch, using Persian leather and Aboriginal fabrics, and hand stitching the components. Aboriginal art fascinates me, and I enjoy discovering the stories behind the images. Sometimes I dream about opening my own gallery here in Melbourne, full of my beautiful bags.

I am also a writer and have so far written several novels in Persian. One day I hope to see them published, and available in bookshops all around the world. Of course I miss Iran, and my extended family there, but I am impressed by Australia’s multi-culture environment, and by the peace and calmness. I feel it is my land too, and that I can be at home here.
