Thornbury House
A thoughtful transformation for modern family living.
This family home in Thornbury was designed for two adults and their two growing children, with a clear vision: retain the charm of the original Edwardian timber house, reduce environmental impact, and create a more functional, light-filled space.
Our challenge was to introduce a second-storey addition that would sit comfortably within the existing heritage character. Drawing on our experience with homes from this era, we approached the project with sensitivity and confidence—ensuring the integrity of the original details was preserved throughout.
The existing home had a south-facing rear yard, which offered limited garden space and minimal natural light. Respecting the outdoor areas and heritage elements, we reimagined the rear of the home to include two new rooms—a bedroom and a music room—while keeping the design compact and efficient. The new upstairs addition was carefully considered to enhance the backyard and allow sunlight to penetrate deeper into the home.
Despite the south-facing living areas, strategic use of skylights and well-placed windows ensures the home feels bright and welcoming. To further support the family’s sustainability goals, we added solar panels to the north-facing roof and introduced raised garden beds in the front yard, creating a productive kitchen garden.
This is a home that respects its past, meets the needs of the present, and looks toward a more sustainable future.
