This project involved a modern refurbishment of an existing dwelling in St Kilda. All of the main spaces were retained and the rooms were enriched by the use of joinery and colour. At the core of the house, a spiral staircase is the feature. The articulation and detail of a large two sided joinery unit is highlighted through a bright green laminate. Natural light can flow between the two spaces by carefully placed glazing surrounding the joinery.
The use of colour in this house is simple but exciting. It demonstrates that bold colours can be used is a modest and restrained way. To add a little bit more ‘whimsy’ and fun to this house, a chalkboard wall was placed behind the spiral staircase – allowing the family to create an ever changing artwork at the entrance to their house.
